OWWA assists kin of OFW who died after falling from HK building

The sister of Arlene Carbon, the Filipina domestic helper who died after falling from a building in Hong Kong, has been flown to the special administrative region to arrange the repatriation of her body.

Nympha Carbon left the Philippines on July 9 and will stay at the Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC) in Hong Kong while waiting for clearance to bring home her sister's remains, according to Administrator Rebecca J. Calzado of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

Calzado said this was part of the assistance being extended to the Carbon family following Arlene's death.

Arlene, 43, died last June 30 after falling from the 43rd floor of the Grand Promenade, Tower 3 in the Sai Wan Ho district.

The Chai Wan Police reported the case as death of a “person who fell from height,” but Arlene's relatives in the Philippines are suspecting foul play.

“Hindi niya yan magagawa [suicide],” said Ailyn, one of Arlene's sisters, in an earlier report. “Imposible yan dahil napakarami pa ng kanyang pangarap.”

Calzado said because of Arlene's active status with OWWA before her death, Nympha and her family will receive death and burial benefits of P220,000 and a livelihood assistance of P15,000.

The Carbon family is also eligible to avail of the OWWA Education and Livelihood Assistance Program (ELAP), which provides a scholarship grant to a qualified dependent of an active OWWA member.

“Airport assistance will be extended by OWWA upon the arrival of the human remains in Manila,” Calzado said. —Rie Takumi/KBK, Source: gmanetwork.com/news/story
