Saudi's OFW Hiring Remains

MANILA, Philippines — The Saudi Ministry of Labor has decided to extend the ban on domestic workers from the Philippines and Indonesia until such time that agreement has been reached on the conditions set forth by the two countries regarding the hiring of their nationals in the Kingdom.

The conditions stipulated unilaterally by Indonesia and the Philippines include higher wages for workers, among others.

“The ministry suspended the recruitment of domestic laborers from Indonesia and Philippines until solutions guaranteeing the protection of the interests of all parties are found,” said the ministry’s statement issued earlier this week.

Meantime, Saudi Arabia will import from other labor supplying markets, the statement added. “The decisions have been taken after attempts to solve the issues through discussions with concerned officials in those two countries failed,” the ministry added.

The Saudi government first issued the ban July 2, 2011 after it announced it will no longer issue work visas for Filipino domestic workers, citing strict requirements and "unfair" regulatory provisions imposed by the Philippine government.

Saudi's decision to stop hiring Filipino domestic workers was reportedly a result of a breakdown on the negotiations between the two countries on contending labor issues imposed by Manila such as the minimum monthly wage of $400, submission of prospective Saudi employers of the location map of their residence and the opening of a bank account by the employer for the hired domestic workers to ensure that latter will be paid of her salary, among others.
